Plesk systems can be migrated using the integrated Migration and Transfer Tool.
The target server may run a newer operating system version or even a different Linux distribution than the source server. The only requirement is that the target server has the same or a newer Plesk version installed. Additionally, the Plesk license edition on the target must be identical or higher.
1. Preparation
- Install Plesk on the target server (same or newer version than the source server).
- Activate the same services as on the old server (web server, PHP versions, mail, databases).
- Install all required extensions on the target server.
- Ensure SSH (port 22) is reachable between source and target.
- Optional: Add the target server’s SSH key to the source server.
- Activate the license on the target server.
2. Starting the migration
In the target Plesk:
Tools & Settings → Migration & Transfer Manager → Start New Migration
Enter the source server’s IP and root/admin credentials.
Plesk automatically reads all domains, subscriptions, users, etc.
Select the objects you want to migrate (domains, mail, databases, settings).
3. Pre-Check & Transfer
Plesk automatically performs a compatibility check.
When selecting “Start Migration”, all data will be transferred.
Monitor the progress in the panel; if errors occur, individual items can be re-migrated.
4. Post-processing
- Test websites and mail services on the target server (e.g., using the preview function or a hosts file entry).
- Optional: Run a “Re-sync” to apply any changes made during or after the migration.
5. Go-Live
- Update DNS records to point to the new IP addresses.
- Transfer the license from the old server to the new one if required.
- Shut down the old server after successful testing.
